U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders and Governor Peter Shumlin are touting separate plans to help make it easier for young people to afford college.
On Monday, Sanders outlined a proposal to help students earn college credits in high school as a way to cut the cost of earning a college diploma.
Sanders says one way to address the soaring costs of college is to expand programs that allow high school juniors and seniors to take college-level courses and get credit in high school and college. He says the “dual enrollment” approach reduces the cost and time necessary to complete a college degree.
Also Monday, Governor Shumlin highlighted plans to help eligible Vermont students attend up to two years of college at a Vermont institution for free.
The Vermont Strong Scholars Program will provide tuition loan forgiveness to graduates who remain in the state to work in certain sectors in Vermont.
