MNA Continues Push For Full-Service Hospital In Northern Berkshires

A hearing continues Thursday on the bankruptcy status of Northern Berkshire Healthcare, the parent company of the shuttered North Adams Regional Hospital. About 20 former employees and members of the Massachusetts Nurses Association plan to attend the hearing in Springfield.

Since the hospital closed March 28th, work has been ongoing to allow Berkshire Medical Center to open a satellite emergency facility at the site. The MNA, which represents about 100 of the 530 former NBH employees, has intervener status in the case. Spokesman David Schildmeier says it’s the MNA’s understanding that the court-appointed bankruptcy trustee, BMC and bondholders have found common ground.

“Wells Fargo and Berkshire [Medical Center] have come to some understanding in how to utilize the current facility,” said Schildmeier.

BMC is awaiting a license from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to open the satellite facility. Schildmeier says the ultimate goal is to restore some semblance of a full-service hospital in the region.
