People in North Adams are rallying at North Adams Regional Hospital trying to prevent tomorrow’s scheduled closing.

Following a meeting Wednesday night at the American Legion and a protest outside the hospital this morning, roughly 30 community members are occupying the hospital cafeteria.  David Schildmeier is with the Massachusetts Nurses Association which represents about 100 nurses at the hospital.

“Community members have decided that they are not going to leave the hospital until there is a guarantee that there will be a hospital in place after tomorrow [Friday]”, said Schildmeier.

The MNA and the state’s largest healthcare union, which represents nearly 200 at the hospital, are calling on state government to intervene. The hospital’s parent company, Northern Berkshire Healthcare has announced it will file Chapter 7 bankruptcy and will cease operations.
