A New York state senator has secured a grant to help advance Ulster County’s electric bus initiative.

State Senator Jen Metzger says the $100,000 State and Municipal Facilities Capital program grant will help fund a 30kw solar array, to be installed on the roof of the Ulster County Area Transit, or UCAT, facility, to power the facility and charging infrastructure for any electric buses that are procured.

“It’s going to help the county meet its clean energy goals,” Metzger says. “And it’s really going to be a model, I think, for other counties across the state. It’s truly innovative.”

This state funding will contribute to fellow Democrat Ulster County Executive Pat Ryan’s goal of using 100 percent renewable electricity by 2030. The county is working to electrify its bus fleet to help with the goal.
