A New York state senator is renewing his call to establish a three-digit suicide hotline number.
Democratic state Senator David Carlucci says it’s time to create a suicide hotline number along the lines of 9-1-1. He has sponsored legislation to establish 9-8-8 and wants it enacted to help people during the COVID-19 pandemic. He cites a New York City emergency room doctor who died by suicide as one of many examples of the need for such a hotline. Carlucci believes by simplifying an 11-digit number, people will more easily recall it in a crisis. Hudson Valley Democrat James Skoufis is one of two Senate co-sponsors. Democrat Carmen Arroyo sponsors the bill in the Assembly.
