U.S. Reps: Can We Use Official Funds To Buy Feminine Hygiene Products

Three Democratic members of Congress are asking for clarification on House policy concerning the use of official funds to purchase feminine hygiene products.

New York Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney says the need for clarification comes after he purchased a box of tampons in June. He says the House finance office told him that the use of his Members’ Representational Allowance for this purpose was not permitted. And now, Maloney and Representatives Grace Meng of New York and Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida have penned a letter to the new leaders of the Committee on House Administration asking that they clarify guidance on a policy that has been interpreted to include hygienic products such as lotion, tissues and first aid kits. The letter also asks that menstrual products be made available in the House Office Supply Store, in a move toward gender equity.
