HV Assemblywoman Aims To Change NYS Tax Law Re: Itemizing

A state lawmaker from Westchester County is planning to introduce legislation to help mitigate the harm she says the new federal tax laws will cause to many New York residents.

Democratic Assemblywoman Amy Paulin of Scarsdale says the new tax laws will especially hurt residents in areas of the state with high property taxes, such as Westchester. She says the provision to cap the amount of the state and local tax deduction at $10,000 disproportionately affects New York. So Paulin, at the suggestion of a constituent, will be introducing legislation to allow residents to itemize deductions on their New York State tax returns even if they do not itemize on their federal returns. She says current New York tax law allows taxpayers to itemize deductions on their state returns only if they have itemized on their federal returns.
