New York state Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie Wednesday announced a joint effort with Governor Andrew Cuomo to support the transition to full-day kindergarten in next year's budget for all school districts in New York that still maintain half-day programs. A few assemblymen in the Hudson Valley praise the effort.

Heastie noted that Democratic Hudson Valley Assemblymembers James Skoufis and Kenneth Zebrowski have sponsored legislation to help school districts in this transition to full-day. While the majority of New York’s more than 700 school districts provide full-day kindergarten, a few do not. Skoufis, who represents North Rockland and Washingtonville, says these are two of the six school districts remaining in the state with half-day programs. Zebrowski, who represents part of Rockland County, says statewide education standards assume a full-day kindergarten program and New York cannot allow a few kids and districts to fall behind at this critical period of development.
