A city in Westchester County has a new law that addresses drag racing, and it takes effect Saturday.
Mayor Mike Spano and Yonkers City Council members Thursday announced bipartisan legislation that authorizes the Yonkers Police Department to seize vehicles that are used in illegal drag racing on any road or highway in the city. The legislation was prompted by the death of Yonkers resident and Oakland A’s baseball prospect Michael Nolan after an incident related to drag racing. Spano says he hopes that police authority to seize vehicles will act as a deterrent. For many years drag racing has been a problem on major streets in Yonkers, Central Park Avenue in particular, because of the straight roadway. The ordinance takes effect July 1.
