NY Governor Signs Two Lyme Disease Bills

WAMC / Dave Lucas

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed into law two bills concerning Lyme and Tick-Borne diseases. The bills were sponsored by Hudson Valley lawmakers.

Republican state Senator Sue Serino says there is a lack of age-appropriate materials and resources available for schools. Her bill requires the commissioners of the Departments of Health, Education, and Environmental Conservation to collaborate on developing age-appropriate instructional materials concerning Lyme and other tick-borne diseases. The bill does not mandate that the materials be taught in schools, only that the information be made available. Another of Serino’s bills requires the state health department to create a public awareness and prevention campaign for these diseases. Democrat Didi Barrett sponsored both bills in the Assembly and both bills are slated to take effect immediately.
