Lowey Calls On Congress To Prohibit Suspects From Buying Guns

New York Democratic Congresswoman Nita Lowey is calling on the House to pass legislation prohibiting suspects on the terror watch list from purchasing firearms.

Currently the federal background check system does not prevent known and suspected terrorists from purchasing firearms. A measure that she is cosponsoring would give the attorney general the authority to block suspects on the terror watch list from buying guns.

Lowey said the terror attacks in Paris underscore the need to prevent dangerous individuals from accessing deadline firearms immediately.

Lowey will be joined by local officials and gun safety advocates on Monday to call for the prohibition.
