Walkway Elevator Temporarily Closes Days After Opening

WAMC, Allison Dunne

An outdoor elevator at pedestrian bridge Walkway Over the Hudson that opened to the public less than one week ago has been taken out of service to replace a part.

The New York State Parks system’s first outdoor elevator was taken out of service late Saturday. New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Spokesman Randy Simons says the outdoor Walkway elevator, which opened to the public August 19, is being serviced after a routine check found that a part was not functioning as it should.

“We have what’s called a position encoder, and that’s a device on the elevator that really tracks where the elevator cab is at all times,” Simons says. “It was acting up a bit, and even though we have multiple backups to that position encoder, we just though it prudent to change out the part.”

He says that since the elevator opened, nearly 2,000 visitors have taken a ride. The elevator is accessed from Upper Landing Park along Poughkeepsie’s waterfront. Simons says the elevator is expected to resume operation by Saturday, August 23.
