More than $2 million in Superstorm Sandy aid is headed for Westchester County.
The nearly $2.5 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency will reimburse Westchester County for 90 percent of the emergency measures taken by the county’s Department of Environmental Facilities to keep the Yonkers Joint Wastewater Treatment Plant running during and after Superstorm Sandy. In announcing the funding, Democratic Congresswoman Nita Lowey said the treatment plant took a direct hit from Sandy, a plant that supplies drinking water and sewage treatment for more than 20 communities, including Bedford, Mount Kisco, and Sleepy Hollow. Lowey, the senior Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee, says the FEMA aid will help ease the financial burden of the county and limit the impact to taxpayers.
