Massachusetts Set Voter Turnout Record For Midterm Election

WAMC

The midterm election saw a voter turnout record in Massachusetts.

All day long Tuesday, poll workers like Joe Campbell in Springfield saw a non-stop stream of voters.

"There's been no lull since 7 o-clock," Campbell said just before noon on Election Day.

Now, the Secretary of State’s office reports that the number of ballots cast is approaching 2.7 million. That is more than any midterm election in Massachusetts history. Ballots mailed in from overseas and provisional ballots are still being counted.

The percentage of registered voters who cast ballots was the highest for a midterm election in Massachusetts in 24 years.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
