51 % The Women's Perspective

51% Show #1219

Climate change was a topic notably absent from the recent presidential campaign – until a storm named Sandy hit the East Coast. Then New York’s Governor Andrew Cuomo called extreme weather ‘the new normal” and called for action on climate change. And New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg endorsed President Obama for re-election, saying he was best equipped to handle the issue of climate change.

The topic has taken center stage.

24 Hours of Reality – the Dirty Weather Report, was a 24 hour live streaming global weather reported sponsored by the Climate Reality Project.  Starting in New York City on Nov 14th, experts and residents from all over the globe weighed in on weather changes they’ve noticed in the past year.  Maggie Fox is president and CEO of the Climate Reality Project, which was founded by former Vice President Al Gore.

Barack Obama broke new political ground as the first black president of the United States. Hillary Clinton was hailed as the first woman to be a real contender for the job. Many have forgotten that Shirley Chisholm made a serious try for the White House in 1972 – the first Democratic woman and the first major party black candidate. Declaring herself “unbossed and unbought,” she took on the political establishment as the candidate of “all the people.” This is part of RadioDiaries series “Contenders” – profiling some of America’s most original presidential candidates.

During the presidential campaign, sweeping generalities about the 99%, the 1%, or the 47% tended to gloss over the real stories of the recession’s impact.  Budget cuts affect real people.

Stephanie and James worked together at the University of Illinois at Chicago before they both found out that they were going to be fired.  Michelle Boyd produced “Meet the Budget Cuts.”
