State Funds Large-Scale Renovation Of Springfield High-Rise Apartment Building

Gov. Charlie Baker Wednesday announced funding for 19 projects across Massachusetts to create or preserve over 1,300 apartments for low-income tenants.

The largest award in this round of housing project subsidies, $10.2 million, will help finance the $45 million renovation of Chestnut Park in downtown Springfield.

Built in the 1970s, there are four buildings with nearly 500 apartments.  The complex includes a 34-story high-rise building with 10 elevators.

Massachusetts Housing and Economic Development Sec. Jay Ash said quality affordable housing is key to the growth of the state’s economy.

"A healthy community has a healthy balance of affordable and market-rate housing," said Ash.

Also being funded are new apartment construction projects in Great Barrington and Northampton, and the continued renovation of the Lyman Terrace public housing development in Holyoke.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
