Sports Report: NY Jets Miss Playoffs

New York Jets Stadium

NFL:

Football fans in Houston, Denver, Minnesota and Pittsburgh are celebrating playoff berths, while New York Jets fans lament another wasted season.

On Sunday, Buffalo beat stopped the Jets and their post season chances yesterday 22-17, Philadelphia topped the Giants 35-30, Miami doubled up New England 20-10. Meanwhile Cincinnati beat Baltimore 24-16, Detroit edged Chicago 24-20, Houston won against Jacksonville 30-6, New Orleans bested Atlanta 20-17, Pittsburgh trumped Cleveland 28-12, Indianapolis defeated Tennessee 30-24, Washington crushed Dallas 34-23, Kansas City topped Oakland 23-17, Denver bested San Diego 27-20, Seattle crushed Arizona 36-6, San Francisco beat St. Louis in overtime 19-16, Carolina won against Tampa Bay 38-10, and it was Minnesota over Green Bay 20-13.

Chiefs owner Clark Hunt predicts that at least one NFL franchise will play in Los Angeles next season. The Raiders, Rams or Chargers are expected to file relocation papers on Monday, paving the way for a possible shift. Hunt did not speculate which of the three is the leading candidate for relocation. Hunt is part of a six-man committee made up of league owners that will convene to discuss relocation. The remaining league owners will meet to review their findings the following week and could decide whether one or two teams will move to L.A. for the 2016 season.

The Browns are making changes after a 3-13 season that earned them the second pick in the upcoming NFL draft. Owner Jimmy Haslam has fired coach Mike Pettine and general manager Ray Farmer following their second straight losing season in charge. And the San Francisco 49ers have dismissed head coach Jim Tomsula, who was 5-11 in his only season at the helm.

NBA:

In the NBA, New York topped Atlanta 111-97, Chicago beat Toronto 115-113, Miami defeated Washington 97-75, Portland won against Denver 112-106, and it was the Lakers over Phoenix 97-77.

Brooklyn Nets point guard Jarrett Jack has a torn ACL in his right knee and will miss the remainder of the season. Jack was hurt Saturday in a victory at Boston and the Nets say he also has a small medial meniscus tear. Jack will have surgery on a date that has not been determined.

NHL:

In the NHL, the Islanders beat Dallas 6-5, Florida skated by Minnesota 2-1, Chicago shut out Ottawa 3-0, and it was Anaheim over Winnipeg 4-1.

Marathon:

The first feature-length documentary film about the 120-year-old Boston Marathon is in the works. Its creators say "Boston" will go well beyond the 2013 bombings to retrace the iconic footrace's first steps in 1897. The makers of "Boston" say it won't ignore the dark events of 2013, but will focus more on how the city and its namesake race bounced back.

NCAA:

Ethan O'Day scored 16 points and Vermont held on to beat Harvard 65-62 yesterday despite missing all five of its shots in the final four minutes. Agunwa Okolie led Harvard with 16 points, Corbin Miller had 15 on five 3s and Corey Johnson 14.

Trey Davis scored 18 points, passing 1,000 for his career, and Massachusetts defeated La Salle 74-67 in an Atlantic-10 opener yesterday. Seth Berger and Donte Clark scored 15 points each and Antwan Space added 12 points and nine rebounds for the Minutemen. UMass outrebounded the Explorers 47-31 and had 15 on the offensive boards.

Notre Dame wide receiver Will Fuller says he will skip his senior season to enter the NFL draft. Fuller originally had said he planned to return to the school but announced the change of mind on Twitter. Fuller led the Irish in receiving this year with 62 catches for 1,258 yards and 14 touchdowns.
