Montpelier, VT – Vermont U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders says an agreement by the U.S. Postal Service to delay by five months the closing of 252 mail processing centers and 3,700 local post offices gives Congress more time to consider postal form legislation. WAMC's North Country Bureau Chief Pat Bradley has more...
Tuesday's announcement comes after Sanders, an Independent, and a small group of senators met with the U.S. Postmaster General and the chairman of the U.S Postal Service Board of Governors on Monday.
The cash-strapped postal service, which is forecast to lose a record $14.1 billion next year, announced last week it was moving forward with plans to close 252 mail processing centers and 3,700 local post offices.
The closings under consideration include the mail processing facility in White River Junction, VT., which would cost 245 jobs.
