New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said he spoke with Orthodox Jewish leaders Wednesday morning to come up with an action plan to contain the spread of COVID-19 clusters. A second discussion to set the outreach plan in motion was slated for 3 Wednesday afternoon. Cuomo says 20 zip codes in the state have high infection rates. Among the highest are three locations in Orange and Rockland Counties.

A number of issues that garnered headlines in the Hudson Valley in 2019 continue this year. There will be a number of closely watched political contests, environmental issues and, most recently, attacks on religious institutions. Authorities in the Rockland County Town of Ramapo are taking measures to increase security following the stabbings during a Hanukkah celebration nearly one week ago in the hamlet of Monsey. The town police chief also spoke to reporters about the suspect’s possible connection to another stabbing in Monsey in November.

In New York, Ramapo Town officials updated reporters Thursday following Saturday’s stabbings during a Hanukkah celebration at rabbi’s house in Monsey. Officials say they have and will continue to take security measures in the wake of the violence that came after other similar attacks on the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community in Brooklyn. 

Lawmakers Consider Legislation Following Monsey Attack

Federal and state lawmakers are considering ways to help combat anti-Semitic violence. This comes following the Saturday stabbings during a Hanukkah celebration in Monsey, in Rockland County, and after similar attacks in New York City and New Jersey. New York U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand held a roundtable Monday, where participants discussed needed laws and education.

NY Rep Engel Visits With Monsey Community After Attack

A number of elected officials and community leaders gathered Monday at Ramapo Town Hall for a roundtable with Democratic U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. She wanted to hear from the community following the weekend stabbings during a Hanukkah celebration at a Rabbi’s house in Monsey in Rockland County. Democratic Congressman Eliot Engel, of New York’s 16th District, took part. First, he spoke with WAMC’s Hudson Valley Bureau Chief Allison Dunne about the community he represented before redistricting.

Following a stabbing incident during a Hanukkah celebration Saturday in the New York City suburb of Monsey, a suspect is in custody.
