NBA:

In the NBA, the Knicks topped Brooklyn 110-96, Washington won against Boston 118-93, Toronto bested Oklahoma City 112-102, Phoenix beat Detroit 107-100, Houston defeated San Antonio 101-99, the Clippers won against Portland 111-80, Golden State crushed Dallas 116-95, Charlotte beat Utah 104-98, Minnesota bested Orlando 123-107, and it was Indiana over Philadelphia in overtime 122-115.

Isaiah Whitehead has been placed in the concussion protocol by the Nets after slamming his head on the court in Tuesday's game against Minnesota. The Nets have signed Yogi Ferrell and waived Greivis Vasquez as they try to deal with an injury-riddled point guard corps. Whitehead has been starting with regular starter Jeremy Lin sidelined by a strained left hamstring.

The NBA has fined Washington guard John Wall $25,000 for inappropriate interaction with an official and failing to leave the court in a timely manner after he was ejected in the final minute of Monday's loss to the Rockets. Official Marc Davis said he gave Wall a technical foul for bumping him. Davis said he told Wall to "watch himself" and that Wall "looked over his shoulder and used vulgarity and inappropriate language."

NHL:

In the NHL, Ottawa skated by Buffalo in a shootout 2-1, Columbus beat Anaheim 3-2, and it was Chicago over St. Louis 2-1.

Buffalo Sabres forward Evander Kane is set to return after missing 11 games with broken ribs. Coach Dan Bylsma also said yesterday that star center Jack Eichel might soon be cleared for practice. Bylsma said Eichel was meeting with a doctor to have his sprained left ankle evaluated, and could be cleared for on-ice workouts within days.

NFL:

The New York Giants have placed rookie safety Darian Thompson on injured reserve with a foot injury that will require surgery. It was one of four moves the Giants announced yesterday. Offensive lineman Adam Gettis has been signed off the practice squad with left guard Justin Pugh expected to miss up to a month with a sprained right knee. The team also signed receivers Kevin Norwood and Da'Ron Brown to their practice squad.

New York Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick says he's "definitely optimistic" that he'll be able to play Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams despite having a sprained left knee. Fitzpatrick was injured last Sunday at Miami in the third quarter of New York's 27-23 loss, but returned to finish the game while wearing a brace on the knee.

New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick says the letter he wrote to President-elect Donald Trump before Election Day was done out of a friendship that goes back many years and was "not politically motivated." Belichick addressed the letter during a news conference yesterday, two days after Trump read it aloud at a campaign rally in New Hampshire.

Left tackle Ryan Clady has been placed on injured reserve by the New York Jets. He's been dealing with an injured shoulder since the third week of the season. Clady joined the Jets from Denver in the off season.

Tony Romo has been listed as a full practice participant Wednesday for the first time since the Dallas quarterback broke a bone in his back in a preseason game in August. The 36-year-old Romo ran with the scout team in practice. Rookie Dak Prescott remains the starter with the 7-1 Cowboys surging to the best record in the NFC with a seven-game winning streak.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera says the NFL needs to focus on getting players to "lower the target" and create a "strike zone" for hits on the quarterback. Rivera says the league should consider player ejections for such hits, something the NCAA currently enforces. His plea comes after Panthers quarterback Cam Newton absorbed several questionable hits this season.

MLB:

Houston second baseman Jose Altuve was voted player of the year and the AL's outstanding player by his peers in the annual Players Choice Awards of the Major League Baseball Players Association. Second baseman Daniel Murphy was selected the NL's outstanding player in his first season with Washington. Major league ERA leader Kyle Hendricks of the Cubs was the NL's outstanding pitcher, and Rick Porcello won the AL award in his second season with the Red Sox.

A person familiar with the decision tells The Associated Press that the baseball players' union has fired arbitrator Fredric Horowitz. The players' association made the decision after Horowitz ruled against it in an injury assignment case involving Dodgers pitcher Charlie Culberson.

Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred does not think Donald Trump's election as president will slow the sport's plans to stage more events in Latin America. Expanding international play has been one of Manfred's goals since succeeding Bud Selig as commissioner in January 2015. Trump made negative comments about Mexico during his campaign and promised to build a wall between it and the United States to control illegal immigration.

Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez was voted the NL comeback player of the year by his peers in the annual Players Choice Awards of the Major League Baseball Players Association. Fernandez returned from Tommy John surgery to go 16-8 with a 2.86 ERA this year before he and two friends were killed in a boating accident in September. Baltimore slugger Mark Trumbo is the AL Comeback Player of the year after leading the majors with 47 home runs after slugging just 13 in 2015.

Major league ERA leader Kyle Hendricks of the Cubs was the NL's outstanding pitcher, and Rick Porcello won the AL award in his second season with the Red Sox.

Tigers pitcher Michael Fulmer was the AL's top rookie, and Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager the top NL rookie.

The ball used for the final out of the 1986 World Series won by the New York Mets is among the items being put up for auction by the family of late Hall of Fame catcher Gary Carter. Carter was behind the plate when Boston's Marty Barrett struck out to end Game 7. The Mets 8-5 at Shea Stadium that night for their most recent championship. Carter was elected to the Hall in 2003. He died in 2012 at 57. A game-worn Mets jersey from 1985 and Carter's jersey and pants from a 1984 Montreal Expos game also are in the online sale by Heritage Auctions that closes Nov. 18-19.

A person familiar with the decision tells The Associated Press that the baseball players' union has fired arbitrator Fredric Horowitz. The players' association made the decision after Horowitz ruled against it in an injury assignment case involving Dodgers pitcher Charlie Culberson.

NCAA:

The former home of the 1996 Summer Olympics and the Atlanta Braves is getting a new tenant. Georgia State has received approval to purchase Turner Field for $22.8 million, clearing the way to convert it into a college football stadium. The Panthers plan to move into the stadium next season after playing at the much larger Georgia Dome since the program was launched in 2010.

Top-ranked Notre Dame has signed 6-foot-2 forward Danielle Patterson and 6-foot-3 center Mikayla Vaughn to play for the Irish starting next season. Coach Muffet McGraw describes both as athletic post players with "high motors" who will help the Irish press and on defense. She said neither player will likely start immediately, but both should contribute. Patterson averaged 22 points and 10 rebounds at The Mary Louis Academy in New York. McGraw says Patterson can play on the perimeter but also score around the basket. Vaughn averaged 15 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks at Friends' Central School near Philadelphia before transferring to Paul VI Catholic High School in Fairfax, Virginia, for her senior season. McGraw says she will help defensively by being a presence inside.
