The Toronto Blue Jays have added another outfielder to their already-imposing lineup. The Jays have picked up Melvin Upton Jr. and cash from the San Diego Padres for minor league right-hander Hansel Rodriguez. Upton is hitting .255 with 16 home runs, 45 RBIs, 46 runs scored and 20 stolen bases this season. The Padres will reportedly pay all but $5 million of the $22.5 million remaining on Upton's contract, which expires after next season.
Cardinals reliever Trevor Rosenthal has been placed on the 15-day disabled list because of inflammation in his right shoulder. Rosenthal lost his closer's job in late June and is 2-4 with a hefty 5.13 ERA and 14 saves in 18 chances. He is undergoing tests that might show why he suddenly became so ineffective.
Olympics:
While Rio Olympic organizers are under immense pressure to finish preparations before Aug. 5, their Tokyo counterparts are already facing skyrocketing costs for an event four years away. Tokyo 2020 organizing committee president Yoshiro Mori acknowledged at an executive board meeting this week the cost of building seven temporary venues for the Olympics has surged to an estimated $2.6 billion, up from an initial estimate of $690 million.
Mori said the original figures were the result of sloppy calculations which he blamed on the Tokyo metropolitan government and the Japanese Olympic Committee. The organizing committee hasn't disclosed an official estimate of the overall costs but has acknowledged it will be considerably higher than the $3.5 billion that was forecast in the bid.
The U.S. women's basketball team plays three tuneup games on the East coast before heading to the Rio Olympics, starting with a matchup against France in Newark Delaware. Coach Geno Auriemma says the team needs to determine its strengths. The exhibitions include a game Friday against Canada in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
Roger Federer says he will miss the rest of the 2016 tennis season. The winner of a record 17 Grand Slam titles says he needs to protect his surgically repaired left knee. Federer wrote on his Facebook page that he will also skip the Rio Olympics.
NFL:
Veterans are set to report today for the New England Patriots as training camp opens this week. The first public practice is set for tomorrow morning. The Patriots open their exhibition season on August 11 by hosting the New Orleans Saints.
Pete Carroll has received a contract extension. The Seattle Seahawks head coach agreed to the deal two days after the team finalized an extension with general manager John Schneider. ESPN reports that Carroll's deal runs through the 2019 season. The Seahawks are 60-36 with five playoff appearances in six seasons under Carroll. They made back-to-back Super Bowl appearances, defeating the Broncos and losing to the Patriots.
Josh Gordon's return to football has been sidetracked again. The oft-suspended Browns wide receiver has a quadriceps injury that will keep him out of training camp for at least two weeks. It's a new setback for Gordon, who hasn't played since 2014 and was suspended all of last season for multiple drug violations. He was just reinstated by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell (guh-DEHL') Monday.

NBA:
Amare Stoudemire has retired from the NBA after signing his final contract with the New York Knicks. Stoudemire's greatest team success came in Phoenix as Steve Nash's pick-and-roll partner, but he chose to leave the NBA as a member of the Knicks, the team that had a lengthy playoff drought that ended after he signed there in 2010. Stoudemire was a six-time All-Star, but battled knee injuries after his sensational first season in New York, when he became the first Knicks player to be voted an All-Star starter since Patrick Ewing.
The Washington Wizards say they have re-signed shooting guard Bradley Beal, who agreed earlier this month to a five-year, $128 million contract. The third overall pick in the 2012 draft averaged a career-high 17.4 points last season but appeared in only 55 games, including 35 starts. Beal has never played more than 70 games in a season and has been bothered by stress fractures in his right leg.
