World Cup:

On Sunday, the U.S. Women head to Vancouver to take on Japan in the title game. It’s a rematch between the teams who saw each other in the last World Cup, where Japan won on penalty points.

MLS:

Toronto FC's Damien Perquis, Columbus Crew's Federico Higuain, New England's Kelyn Rowe and Real Salt Lake's Demar Phillips have been fined by MLS for infractions.

The MLS Disciplinary Committee fined the players undisclosed amounts on Thursday.

The infractions occurred in matches played last week — Perquis (embellishment) against D.C. United; Higuain (simulation) against the Revolution; Rowe (hands to neck) against Columbus; and Phillips (failing to leave the field in timely manner after red card) against the New York Red Bulls.

Horse Racing:

Triple Crown winner American Pharoah will make his next start at the $1 million Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park on Aug. 2.

Owner Ahmed Zayat told The Associated Press in a text message that his horse would make his first start since his dazzling Belmont win at the New Jersey shore track.

ESPN.com was the first to report the story.

The Haskell is a 1-1/8 mile event for 3-year-olds and it will give Zayat of Teaneck a chance to race the bay colt in his home state. The race also has been good to trainer Bob Baffert, who has won the track's biggest race seven times.

American Pharoah became the first horse in 37 years to sweep the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont, joining an exclusive 12-member club that includes Secretariat, Citation, Whirlaway and Affirmed.

NFL:

New York Jets defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson has been suspended without pay for the first four games of the regular season for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

Richardson will be eligible to return to the Jets' active roster on Monday, Oct. 5 after the team's Oct. 4 game against the AFC East rival Miami Dolphins.

"I apologize for letting down my family, teammates, this organization and the fans," Richardson said in a statement.

Richardson is eligible to participate in all offseason and preseason practices and games. The Jets do have depth on their defensive line, with defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson, nose tackle Damon Harrison and first-round pick Leonard Williams.

Entering his third NFL season, Richardson the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2013, who has been mostly a starter since that year, was expected to be a major part of new coach Todd Bowles' defense.

NHL:

New York Rangers forward Martin St. Louis is retiring after 16 NHL seasons, seven All Star selections and one Stanley Cup with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

St. Louis made the announcement Thursday, roughly a month after helping the Rangers reach the Eastern Conference finals, where they lost to the Lightning in seven games.

The 40-year-old St. Louis was uncertain whether he would return for another season after the Rangers were eliminated, but it was clear that New York was not going to bring him back.

St. Louis had 391 goals and 642 assists in 1,134 regular season games with the Calgary Flames, Lightning and Rangers. He won the Stanley Cup with the Lightning in 2004 and the Art Ross Trophy as the league top scorer in 2004 with 94 points.

He also won the Hart Memorial Trophy as the NHL's Most Valuable Player, and the Lester B. Pearson Award as the NHL players association's Most Outstanding Player that season.

Boston Bruins rookie general manager Don Sweeney went into the first day of NHL free agency intent on improving his team's feeble offense, which ranked 22nd in the league. Sweeney added two wingers Wednesday he thinks will be a major part of the solution next season: Matt Beleskey and Jimmy Hayes.

NASCAR:

Every track that hosts a NASCAR national series race has asked its fans to refrain from displaying the Confederate flag at its events. NASCAR Chairman Brian France has called the flag a symbol he personally finds offensive and said he wants to be as aggressive as possible in barring it from sanctioned events.

Daytona International Speedway will hold a voluntary flag exchange program this weekend in which fans can swap any flag of their choice for an American flag.

WNBA:

In the WNBA, Chicago beat Connecticut 77-74, Indiana topped Washington 73-50, Phoenix bested Tulsa 86-55, and it was Los Angeles over San Antonio 86-81.
