Sports Report: Rangers Force Game 7 After Downing Caps

NHL:

In the NHL playoffs, the Rangers were able to stave off elimination by defeating Washington 4-3 last night, tying the series at 3 games apiece, and Anaheim topped Calgary 3-2 in overtime to clinch the series 4-1. The Ducks face the Blackhawks in the Western Conference Finals.

NBA:

In the NBA playoffs, Cleveland beat Chicago 86-84 to tie the series at 2 games apiece and the Clippers won against Houston 128-95, Los Angeles leads the series 3-1.

MLB:

In baseball, in the American League, the Yankees tripled up Baltimore 6-2, Boston doubled up Toronto 6-3, Cleveland topped Minnesota 8-2, Texas edged Tampa Bay 2-1, the Angels bested Houston 3-1, Seattle slid past Oakland 4-3, and it was Kansas City over Detroit 2-1 in 10 innings.

Carl Willis joined the Red Sox yesterday for his first game as their new pitching coach. He replaced Juan Nieves, who was fired last week. Willis spoke to the pitchers before the game, and acknowledged that it's "a bit of an uncomfortable situation" to join the Red Sox in midseason. He says, "It's going to take a little while for me to get up to speed."

In the National League, the Mets topped Philadelphia 7-4, Pittsburgh edged St. Louis 4-3, Washington bested Atlanta 5-4, Milwaukee slid past the Cubs 3-2 in 11 innings, San Francisco beat Miami 3-2, the Dodgers defeated Colorado 9-5, and it was Arizona over San Diego 2-1.

In interleague play the White Sox beat Cincinnati 4-3.

NCAA:

In the NCAA Division 1 men’s lacrosse tournament, UAlbany defeated Cornell 19-10. The Great Danes will face Notre Dame Saturday at 3 p.m.

The NCAA women’s lacrosse tournament, UAlbany lost to Penn 11-10.

Golf:

Rickie Fowler has won The Players Championship in a three-hole playoff with Kevin Kisner and Sergio Garcia. Fowler rallied from a five-shot deficit on the back nine and fired a 5-under 67 to take the lead with several contenders still on the course. Fowler continued to wait until Kisner and Garcia caught him at 12 under to force the first three-man, three-hole playoff in tournament history.

Sailing:

This City by the Sea is riding a wave of excitement harkening to its heyday as an international sailing mecca as it hosts this year's only North American stopover on the Volvo Ocean Race. The sailors from six teams arrived this week in Newport, Rhode Island. The teams departed in October from Spain on the 45,000-mile race. Newport's race village will stay open through May 17th, when the sailors begin racing toward Portugal.

Hockey-World Championship:

Brock Nelson had two goals and an assist to pace the United States to a 3-1 win over Slovenia at the ice hockey world championship. The victory moves the Americans into the quarterfinals. Nelson has six goals in the tournament.

Tennis:

Andy Murray beat Rafael Nadal on clay for the first time, dominating the Madrid Open final to win 6-3, 6-2.

It was Nadal's fourth loss on clay this year, raising questions about his ability to win a 10th French Open title this spring.

F1:

Pole-sitter Nico Rosberg is the winner of the Spanish Grand Prix for his first victory of the Formula One season.

Championship leader and Rosberg's Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton finished second, followed by Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel.
