Sports Report: Rangers Clinch Spot In Eastern Conference Finals

NHL:

In the NHL playoffs, the Rangers bested Washington 2-1 in overtime to take the series 4-3 at game 7 in New York. The Rangers face Tampa Bay in the Eastern Conference finals.

NBA:

In the NBA playoffs, Atlanta squeaked by Washington 82-81 for a 3-2 series lead and it was Golden State over Memphis 98-78 giving the Warriors a 3-2 series lead.

MLB:

In baseball, in the American League, Boston blanked Oakland 2-0, Tampa Bay beat the Yankees 3-2, Texas won against Kansas City 5-2, Minnesota tripled up Detroit 6-2, and it was Baltimore over Toronto 6-1.

In the National League, the Cubs defeated the Mets 2-1, Philadelphia edged Pittsburgh 3-2, Washington bested Arizona 9-6, Miami topped the Dodgers 5-4, and it was Cincinnati over Atlanta 5-1.

In interleague play, Houston slid past San Francisco 4-3, the Angels edged Colorado 2-1 in 11 innings, San Diego doubled up Seattle 4-2, the White Sox beat Milwaukee 4-2, and Cleveland shut out St. Louis 2-0.

NFL:

Noted labor attorney Jeffrey Kessler will aid in the players' union planned appeal of Tom Brady's suspension. The NFL suspended the New England Patriots quarterback for the first four games of the 2015 season for his role in the deflating of footballs. He has until today to file the appeal. His lawyer and the union have said they will appeal.

Indianapolis Colts players did their best yesterday to toe the company line about the scandal dubbed "Deflategate." They kept repeating coach Chuck Pagano's mantra about moving on as they deflected question after question. Yesterday marked the first time Colts players had a chance to comment on the penalties given to New England for tampering with footballs in the AFC championship game last season.

NFL owners will consider three proposals for changing the extra point when they hold their spring meetings next week. The New England Patriots, Philadelphia Eagles and the league's competition committee submitted the proposals. A three-fourths majority is needed for passage.

New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. has won the online vote to star on the cover of the EA Sports video game franchise, Madden 16. But the infamous Madden curse has some Giants fans worried. The Madden curse is when a player who makes the cover of Madden suddenly starts performing worse, becomes prone to injury, and overall has problems for the rest of his career.

Horse Racing:

Kentucky Derby winner American Pharoah drew the dreaded No. 1 post position for Saturday's second leg of the Triple Crown. Despite the poor draw, American Pharoah was made the 4-5 morning-line favorite and Dortmund the 7-2 second choice in an eight-horse field entered Wednesday. It's the smallest field for the 1 3/16-mile Preakness since 2000.

NASCAR:

Kyle Busch is eligible to compete for the NASCAR championship despite missing the first 11 races this season because of injuries suffered in a crash. NASCAR has announced that it has granted Busch a waiver that would allow the Joe Gibbs Racing star to qualify for the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship. Busch needs a victory in one of the remaining 15 points races and be 30th or better in the standings to qualify. He is returning to racing this weekend for the exhibition All-Star race in Charlotte.

Three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves has been cleared and released from infield medical center after a spectacular crash during practice for the race. His car went airborne after spinning into the outer wall and rolling backward between the first and second turns. The car landed upside down before rolling back over on its wheels. Castroneves climbed out of the car without assistance.

Olympics:

The entire U.S. men's sprint relay team has been stripped of its silver medal from the 2012 London Olympics as a result of Tyson Gay's doping case. Gay returned his own medal last year after accepting a one-year doping suspension and the loss of results going back to July 2012, but the status of the U.S. second-place finish in London and the medals of Gay's relay teammates had remained in limbo until now.

NCAA:

The Times Union reports the University at Albany men’s basketball team will open next season at the dominant University of Kentucky on Nov. 13, Great Danes head coach Will Brown confirmed by text message this afternoon. Matt Jones of KentuckySportsradio.com first reported the news on Twitter.

The Times Union reports UAlbany coach Will Brown has long enjoyed showing his players some of the high-profile arenas in college basketball. During his tenure, the Great Danes have played at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion, Duke’s Cameron Indoor Stadium and Kansas’ Allen Fieldhouse.
