Sports Report: Jets' Rex Ryan Among Multiple NFL Coaches Fired

NFL football

NFL:

The Atlanta Falcons, Chicago Bears and New York Jets are in the market for new head coaches and/or general managers. The Falcons fired coach Mike Smith, who went 66-46 with the team but was just 10-22 the last two seasons. The Bears dismissed head coach Marc Trestman and general manager Phil Emery, and the Jets booted coach Rex Ryan and GM John Idzik.

Meanwhile on Sunday Jim Harbaugh announced his resignation from the San Francisco 49ers. A person with knowledge of the discussions says that former 49ers coach has signed a contract to become the new coach at Michigan, his alma mater. (The 51-year-old Harbaugh spent four years as head coach of the Niners, advancing to the NFC championship game in his first three seasons before going 8-8 and missing the playoffs this year. The Wolverines will hold a news conference on Tuesday, although school officials wouldn't confirm Harbaugh's hiring.)

Quarterback Kyle Orton has informed the Buffalo Bills that he's retiring after helping the team post its first winning season since 2004. The Bills finished 9-7 this year, with the 32-year-old Orton winning seven of his 12 starts after replacing EJ Manuel. He completed 64 percent of his passes for 3,018 yards, 18 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

In men's college basketball, Quinnipiac used a fast start to the second half to run away from Maine for an 81-64 victory last night. Ousmane Drame scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. The Bobcats got to the basket for a handful of layups, and Drame dunk during a 20-6 run that ballooned Quinnipiac's three-point halftime lead into a 53-36 advantage.
