Sports Report: Dolphins Kick The Jets 16-13

New York Jets Stadium

NFL:

Caleb Sturgis hit a short field goal with 1:57 remaining to kick the Miami Dolphins past the New York Jets 16-13. The Jets led 13-6 until Lamar Miller scored on a four-yard run early in the fourth quarter to help the Dolphins improve to 7-5. The Jets ran for 277 yards but attempted an NFL season-low 13 passes in falling to 2-10.

The St. Louis Rams say the team and the NFL will not discipline the five players who stood with their hands raised in a show of solidarity with Ferguson protesters before Sunday's game. Rams coach Jeff Fisher said he plans to talk with the players but those conversations will remain confidential.

New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick and team owner Robert Kraft are listed as possible witnesses by prosecutors in the upcoming murder trial of former Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez. Hernandez's lawyers are asking prosecutors to pare down their list of more than 300 witnesses. Hernandez is charged in the 2013 killing of semi-professional football player Odin Lloyd.

NBA:

The Philadelphia 76ers are 0-17 and one loss away from tying the NBA record for worst start following a 109-103 loss to San Antonio. Elsewhere Washington topped Miami 107-86, Denver Beat Utah 103-101, and it was the Clippers over Minnesota 127-101.

NHL:

Over on the ice, Tampa Bay doubled up the Rangers 6-3, Montreal beat Colorado 4-3, Columbus defeated Florida 2-1, Arizona bested Edmonton 5-2, and it was Anaheim over Boston 3-2.

MLB:

Two people with knowledge of the deal tell The Associated Press that the Seattle Mariners are on the verge of signing free-agent slugger Nelson Cruz.

NCAA:

In Top 25 women’s college basketball, No. 21 Syracuse beat Vermont 94-63. In men's college basketball in the Bronx, Fordham beat Siena 69-67.

Soccer:

Doctors say former Brazilian soccer great Pele is in good condition and will remain off kidney support treatment. The 74-year-old was reevaluated on Monday and doctors decided not to put him back on the hemodialysis that had been needed to help support his only kidney.

The three-time World Cup champion was hospitalized early last week after being diagnosed with a urinary tract infection that stemmed from a Nov. 13 surgery to remove kidney stones.

Lake Placid's National Sports Academy is making a plea for cash as it tries to stay operating. The boarding school specializes in training winter sports athletes. The school has struggled financially and has seen its enrollment drop to less than two dozen students. It has turned to crowdsourcing, saying it needs to raise $400,000 to get through the end of the year.
