Sports Report: Tony Stewart Sits Out Race After Hitting Driver; Rory McIlroy Wins PGA Championship

AJ Allmendinger beat Marcos Ambrose on a two-lap dash to the finish to win the NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen International on a somber Sunday. Three-time Cup champion Tony Stewart pulled out of the race 12 hours after he struck and killed a sprint car driver who had climbed from his car during a race in Canandaigua, New York. Kevin Ward Jr.'s family says it "appreciates all the prayer and support" but that members "would like time to grieve."

PGA – Golf:

Rory McIlroy, the Northern Ireland superstar fresh off his triumph at the British Open, was five under par for his final 12 holes en route to a final round 3-under 68 to win the 96th PGA Championship at 16 under par. Phil Mickelson finished second behind McIlroy, who now owns four major titles and two PGA championships.

MLB:

In baseball, in the American League, Carlos Carrasco pitched five dominant innings and the Indians beat the Yankees in New York 4-1. Jason Kipnis got three hits and scored three runs for the Tribe, which finished the season 4-3 against New York. This marks just the second time in 22 years that Cleveland taken the season matchup.

Yoenis Cespedes hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning, Rubby De La Rosa pitched five-hit ball into the eighth and the Boston Red Sox bounced back from a 19-inning loss with a 3-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels yesterday.

Elsewhere in the A-L, Toronto edged Detroit 6-5 in another 19 inning game, Texas tripled up Houston 6-2, Minnesota bested Oakland 6-1, and it was Seattle over the White Sox 4-2.

In interleague play, St. Louis defeated Baltimore 8-3, the Cubs slid past Tampa Bay 3-2 in 12, and it was Kansas City over San Francisco 7-4.

In the National League, Philadelphia topped the Mets 7-6, Cincinnati beat Miami 7-2, San Diego trumped Pittsburgh 8-2, the Dodgers won against Milwaukee 5-1, Colorado bested Arizona 5-3 in 10, and it was Atlanta over Washington 3-1.

Swimming:

Ryan Lochte beat Michael Phelps to win the 200-meter individual medley at the U.S. national championships. That keeps Phelps winless in four races.

It was Lochte's first victory of the five-day meet after finishing second in the 100 freestyle and third in the 200 backstroke.

Horse Racing:

Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. rode horse Cavorting for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin to win the $200,000 dollar Adirondack at Saratoga Race Course. Javier Castellano rode horse I Spent It to win the $200,000 dollar Toyota Saratoga Special for trainer Anthony Dutrow.

WNBA:

In the WNBA, Indiana beat New York 90-76, Connecticut edged Washington 89-81, San Antonio bested Los Angeles 82-76, Chicago won against Atlanta 80-69, and it was Seattle over Tulsa 74-68.
