Sports Report: Rory McIlroy Reclaims Golf's No. 1 Spot

Golf:

Rory McIlroy began the final round of the Bridgestone Invitational trailing Sergio Garcia by three shots before rallying for a two-stroke win over the Spaniard on Sunday. The Irishman opened the final round with three straight birdies en route to a 4-under 66 and a 15-under total. McIlroy earned more than $1.5 million dollars and reclaimed the No. 1 ranking from Adam Scott.

NFL – Preseason:

In NFL preseason action, rookie Andre Williams scored on a 3-yard run in the New York Giants' 17-13 victory over the Buffalo Bills last night in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio. Rookie receiver Corey Washington secured the win with a 73-yard touchdown catch up the right sideline from Ryan Nassib with 13:17 left. Williams provided the Giants' ground game some punch with David Wilson sidelined by a second neck injury in less than a year.

Jon Bon Jovi has gone directly to the media to let Bills fans know he would keep the NFL team in Buffalo should he win the bidding for the club. His letter in The Buffalo News on Sunday marks the first time the rocker has publicly discussed his plans regarding the Bills. He says his group is committed to working with state and local officials to identify a new stadium site in the region. Governor Cuomo says keeping the team in Buffalo is a priority.

The Patriots will travel to Richmond, Virginia today to begin joint training camp practice sessions with the Washington Redskins. Their preseason opener against the Redskins is scheduled for Thursday.

MLB:

In baseball, in the American League, the New York Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox 8-7. Brett Gardner had a tiebreaking homer in the sixth inning for one of his three hits. Former Red Sox infielder Stephen Drew had a pair of hits and drove in four runs in his third game with the Yankees since he was sent there at the trade deadline. Esmil Rogers earned the victory in his Yankees debut. Elsewhere, Baltimore blanked Seattle 1-0, the Angels bested Tampa Bay 7-5, Houston topped Toronto 6-1, Minnesota blew out the White Sox 16-3, Kansas City doubled up Oakland 4-2, and Cleveland defeated Texas 4-3 in 12.

The Texas Rangers have acquired first baseman-outfielder Mike Carp on a waiver claim from Boston. Texas also transferred right-handed pitcher Alexi Ogando from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL. Carp batted .198 with no homers and nine RBIs in 42 games for Boston.

In the National League, San Fransico shut out the Mets 9-0, Washington blanked Philadelphia 4-0, Arizona edged Pittsburgh 3-2 in 10, the Cubs beat the Dodgers 7-3, San Diego slid past Atlanta 4-3 in 10, St. Louis trumped Milwaukee 3-2, and it was Cincinnati over Miami 7-3.

In interleague play, Detroit beat Colorado 4-0.

WNBA:

In the WNBA, New York beat Atlanta 83-76, Los Angeles edged Connecticut 70-69, Chicago bested Washington 76-65, and it was Seattle over San Antonio 71-65.

NASCAR:

Dale Earnhardt Jr. has become the first driver to sweep Pocono Raceway since Denny Hamlin in 2006. Earnhardt started ninth and led for just 14 of 160 laps in winning the GoBowling.com 400. He held off Kevin Harvick over the last two laps and earned his third win of the season.
