The Mohegan Sun casino and its parent company have announced their purchase of a professional lacrosse team that will begin playing in eastern Connecticut in December.
Mohegan Sun and Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority, which also operates a casino in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, announced Wednesday that they bought half the Philadelphia Wings of the National Lacrosse League. The team will move to Uncasville, Connecticut, and play its first game in December at Mohegan Sun Arena.
Terms of the deal weren't disclosed.
It's the second professional sports team acquired by the Mohegans, who have owned the Connecticut Sun of the WNBA since 2003.
Kevin Brown, chairman of the Mohegan's Tribal Council, emphasized lacrosse's roots in Indian culture going back more than 700 years.
The franchise name will be announced at a later date.

In baseball, in the American League, the New York Yankees beat the Detroit Tigers 5-1 last night. Chris Capuano outpitched Justin Verlander, while Brian McCann and Chase Headley homered. The Yankees improved to 2-1 in these three straight games started for Detroit by AL Cy Young Award winners. Elsewhere Toronto bested Baltimore 5-1, Texas defeated the White Sox 3-1, and it was Tampa Bay over Oakland 7-3.
In the National League, Washington topped the Mets 7-1, Pittsburgh trumped Miami 7-3, San Francisco beat Milwaukee 7-4, and Colorado blew out the Cubs 13-4.
In interleague play, the Boston Red Sox beat the St. Louis Cardinals 2-1 last night. Xander Bogaerts drove in both runs, including a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the ninth inning. The matchup of Shelby Miller and Joe Kelly, former teammates who were each other's best man, was a high quality draw that brought out their best. Each allowed a run in seven innings. Elsewhere Kansas City edged Arizona 4-3, the Dodgers doubled up the Angels 2-1, Cincinnati bested Cleveland 8-3, Philadelphia topped Houston 10-3, Seattle won against Atlanta 7-3, and it was San Diego over Minnesota 5-4 in 10.
The National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown is launching a traveling exhibit with museum artifacts and a major digital component. The Hall of Fame said Wednesday it’s joining with Major League Baseball, IMAX, Creative Artists Agency and others for a tour of major league and spring training cities in 2016.
The San Diego Padres hired A.J. Preller as general manager. Preller has been assistant GM of the Texas Rangers. He has extensive international scouting experience, particularly in Latin America. Preller replaces Josh Byrnes, who was fired June 22.
Golf:
Bad back and all, Tiger Woods has arrived in Louisville for the PGA Championship. The four-time champ played a nine-hole practice round at Valhalla and pronounced his back ready to go for Thursday's opening round with an 8:35 a.m. EDT tee time with Phil Mickelson and Padraig Harrington.
NFL:
The New England Patriots and the Washington Redskins will go head-to-head tonight in their preseason opener. For the starters, the real work has already been accomplished. The teams held three days of joint practices this week at the Redskins training camp facility. Coaches say those sessions are more valuable than the limited amount of playing time the first-teamers will get tonight. Indianapolis will face the Jets at Metlife Stadium tonight at 7.
NBA:
The New York Knicks have acquired forwards Quincy Acy and Travis Outlaw from the Sacramento Kings for guard Wayne Ellington and forward Jeremy Tyler. Outlaw has career averages of 8.5 points and 3.2 rebounds in 622 games in 11 seasons with Portland, the Los Angeles Clippers, New Jersey and Sacramento. Acy averaged 3.1 points and 3.2 rebounds in 92 games in two seasons with Toronto and Sacramento.
