wiki commons

NBA:

The San Antonio Spurs are the second NBA team to have a female coach, hiring WNBA star Becky Hammon as an assistant to Gregg Popovich. She will retire from the San Antonio Silver Stars after this season to join the Spurs. The first female NBA assistant was Lisa Boyer, who served on John Lucas' staff in Cleveland in 2001-02.

MLB:

In baseball, in the American League, David Price struck out 10 in his Detroit debut and was long gone when Alex Avila homered in the 12th inning to lift the Tigers over the New York Yankees 4-3 last night. Price pitched 8 2/3 innings and left with the score 3-all. The Tigers got Price from Tampa Bay last week in a three-team deal minutes before the trading deadline. Elsewhere Baltimore tripled up Toronto 9-3, Texas blew out the White Sox 16-0, the largest shutout victory in team history, and Oakland blanked Tampa Bay 3-0.

Only 13 players remain from the Boston Red Sox 25-man roster that won the World Series last fall. Through trades and attrition, the average age of the team dropped from 31 on Opening Day, to 28 yesterday.

In interleague play, the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Boston Red Sox 3-2. Jon Jay hit an RBI single with two out in the eighth inning to break a tie. The Cardinals have won three in a row and four in the last five. Boston has lost three in a row. Elsewhere Philadelphia slid past Houston 2-1 in 15, Seattle doubled up Atlanta 4-2, Cincinnati topped Cleveland 9-2, Minnesota beat San Diego 3-1, Kansas City blew out Arizona 12-2, and it was the Dodgers over the Angels 5-4.

In the National League, the Mets trumped Washington 6-1, Miami doubled up Pittsburgh 6-3, Milwaukee edged San Francisco 4-3, and it was the Cubs over Colorado 6-5 in 12.

Anthony Bosch has agreed to plead guilty to conspiracy to distribute steroids, more than a year after the owner of a now-defunct Florida clinic was accused of providing performance-enhancing drugs to New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez and other players.

Court documents say that Bosch willfully conspired to distribute the anabolic steroid testosterone from October 2008 through December 2012.

Also arrested in connection to a drug conspiracy was Yuri Sucart (SOO'-kart), a cousin of Rodriguez.

NFL:

Tight end Martellus Bennett has been suspended indefinitely by the Chicago Bears after an altercation in practice Monday. Bennett was spun to the ground by rookie cornerback Kyle Fuller during a full-pad scrimmage in which players were not supposed to be taken to the ground. Bennett responded by getting up, grabbing the first-round draft pick and slamming him to the turf.

New York Jets rookie safety Calvin Pryor will not play in the team's preseason opener against the Indianapolis Colts tomorrow night. Coach Rex Ryan says the first-round pick missed a lot of work after suffering a concussion last month. Pryor returned to full contact on Monday, but Ryan anticipates holding him out until the team's second preseason game.

WNBA:

In the WNBA, Chicago beat Connecticut 82-66, Minnesota squeaked by Indiana 66-64, Washington bested New York 79-46, Phoenix won against Atlanta 75-67, and Tulsa topped Los Angeles 96-90.
