Ortiz's Game-Tying Grand Slam Leads Sox To Victory

The Detroit Tigers received another outstanding performance from their starting rotation, but it wasn't enough to stop the Red Sox from evening the American League Championship Series at one game apiece.

David Ortiz hit a game-tying grand slam in the eighth inning before Jarrod Saltalamacchia supplied a walkoff single to lift the Red Sox past the Tigers 6-5. Boston rallied from a 5-1 deficit after Max Scherzer held them to two hits while striking out 13 over seven innings.

Game 3 is Tuesday in Detroit.

Checking the NFL, Tom Brady's 17-yard touchdown pass to Kenbrell Thompkins with 5 seconds left gave the Patriots a 30-27 victory yesterday. The touchdown capped a 70-yard drive in which the Patriots marched downfield with no timeouts after getting the ball with 1:08 to go.

Elsewhere, Pittsburgh knocked off the Jets 19-6. Cincinnati passed Buffalo 27-24 in overtime. Carolina topped Minnesota 35-10. Detroit beat Cleveland 31-17. Green Bay won against Baltimore 19-17. Kansas City topped Oakland 24-7. It was Philadelphia over Tampa Bay 31-20. St. Louis trumped Houston 38-13. Denver edged Jacksonville 35-19. Seattle bested Tennessee 20-13. San Francisco defeated Arizona 32-20 and Washington fell to Dallas 31-16.

In the NHL, Winnipeg blanked Jew Jersey 3-0. Phoenix beat Carolina 5-3. Los Angeles shut out Florida 3-0 and it was Anaheim over Ottawa 4-1.

In NBA preseason action, Houston beat Indiana 107-98. New Orleans topped Atlanta 105-73 and Phoenix defeated San Antonio 106-99.

Finally in golf, Russ Cochran holed a 5-foot putt on the final hole for his fourth straight birdie and a one-stroke victory over David Frost in the SAS Championship.
