Remote learning summer school starts Monday  in the largest school district in western Massachusetts.

Typically, summer school is for students who need to make up classwork in order to move into the next grade in the fall.

But summer school in Springfield this year is open to everyone, said Superintendent of Schools Dan Warwick.

"We recognize that during this pandemic there has been some learning loss, so we are offering an opportunity for enrichment programs through the summer for our students," said Warwick.

When school buildings closed last March, the district sent more than 10,000 laptops to students and set up wi-fi hot spots throughout the city.

A free meals distribution program will continue through the summer at 17 school buildings.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
