#SportsReport: Celtics Top Cavaliers; College Basketball Season Starts

The Boston Celtics have reeled off a five-game winning streak since a season-opening loss to the Philadelphia 76ers. Gordon Hayward hit all 16 of his 2-point attempts while scoring a career-high 39 points as the Celtics downed the Cavaliers, 119-113. 

Hayward put in Kemba Walker's miss with 22 seconds left to give Boston a 118-113 lead. Walker had 25 points for the Celtics, who hit 56% of their 85 shots.

LeBron James recorded his third consecutive triple-double by providing 30 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds in the Lakers’ 118-112 victory at Chicago. Quinn Cook had 17 points for Los Angeles, which trailed by as many as 19 before earning its sixth straight win following a loss to the Clippers in the season opener.

Jamal Murray scored 21 points and the Nuggets ended Miami’s three-game winning streak by topping the Heat, 109-89. Will Barton and Jerami Grant each scored 15 for Denver, which outscored Miami 31-20 in the third quarter to go ahead by 21.

Trae Young scored 28 of his 29 points in the second half to push the Hawks past the Spurs, 108-100, Jabari Parker added 19 points to help Atlanta end a three-game losing skid.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 17 of his 24 points in the second half of the Thunder’s 102-94 triumph over the Magic. Chris Paul added 20 points, collected six assists and helped Oklahoma City hold an opponent under 100 points for the fourth time in seven games.

Devonte Graham capped his career-high 35-point performance by hitting two free throws with 1.7 seconds left in overtime to send the Hornets to their third straight win, 122-110 over the Pacers. Terry Rozier added 22 points and Miles Bridges had 18 for Charlotte, which battled back from a 14-point, fourth-quarter deficit.

In NBA news, the Atlanta Hawks will spend a huge chunk of the NBA season without one of their up-and-coming forwards. John Collins has been suspended for 25 games without pay for a violation of the NBA's Anti-Drug Program after testing positive for a growth hormone. Collins is the team’s No. 2 scorer and top rebounder, averaging 17 points and 8.8 boards.

Trail Blazers forward Zach Collins has undergone a shoulder surgery that will sideline him for at least four months. The team said Collins had successful surgery Tuesday to repair his left labrum. Collins dislocated his shoulder in a game against Dallas on Oct. 27.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

The college basketball season kicked off Tuesday. In men's basketball, Siena topped American 96-80, UMass defeated UMass-Lowell 79-64, and Hartford took down Central Connecticut 74-59.

In women's basketball, UAlbany beat Columbia in overtime 82-78, Binghamton ripped Siena 89-62, Syracuse downed Ohio 66-54, and Dartmouth rolled over Vermont 72-55.

In top-25 basketball, tenth-ranked Villanova blasted Army, 97-54 as Jeremiah Robinson-Earl scored 24 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Saddiq Bey had 22 points for the Wildcats, who went on a 16-0 run in the first half and raced to a 31-point lead before intermission.

No. 7 Maryland rolled to a 95-71 win over Holy Cross as Jalen Smith contributed 16 points and 11 rebounds. Darryl Morsell scored 15 for the Terrapins, who led by just seven before going on a 16-4 spurt to make it 68-49.

Myles Powell scored 27 points to lead No. 12 Seton Hall to a 105-71 win over Wagner. Quincy McKnight added 10 points and seven assists for the Pirates, who won easily while coach Kevin Willard sat out the first of at least two games.

The second-ranked Kentucky Wildcats and fourth-rated Duke Blue Devils have opened their men’s basketball schedules with victories in the Champions Classic at Madison Square Garden. Kentucky freshman Tyrese Maxey scored 26 points to lead a 69-62 victory over No. 1 Michigan State. The Spartans had whittled a 10-point halftime deficit down to four when Kentucky went on a 9-0 behind 3s from Kahlil Whiney and Nate Sestina. Cassius Winston was the lone Spartan to score in double-figures, finishing with 21.

Tre Jones scored 15 points and Cassius Stanley added 11 of his 13 points in the second half of the Blue Devils’ 68-66 victory over No. 3 Kansas. Duke trailed 61-60 until Stanley converted a 3-point play with 2:29 remaining. Jones added a big basket and two free throws in the final 93 seconds to help the Blue Devils ice the victory. Devon Dotson had 17 points and Udoka Azubuike added eight in his return to the Kansas lineup after missing most of last season with a hand injury.

Jordan Nwora nailed four 3-pointers while providing 23 points and 12 rebounds as fifth-ranked Louisville whipped Miami, 87-74. Ryan McMahon sank three consecutive 3-pointers as the Cardinals scored 17 consecutive points during a four-minute span in the first half.

Sixth-ranked Florida was a 74-59 winner against North Florida behind Kerry Blackshear Jr.’s 20 points and 10 boards in his Gators debut. Scottie Lewis finished with nine points, five rebounds and two assists, while Tre Mann had 11 points and four boards as the pair made their Florida debut.

Corey Kispert scored a career-high 28 points and eighth-rated Gonzaga used a second-half surge to hammer Alabama State, 95-64. Filip Petrusev added 15 and helped the Bulldogs go on a 15-0 run to open a 65-41 lead.

Newcomer Jahmi'us Ramsey led No. 13 Texas Tech with 19 points in an 85-60 rout of Eastern Illinois. The Red Raiders led 46-31 at halftime and coasted to their 48th consecutive non-conference home win.

James Wiseman led 14th-ranked Memphis to a 97-64 thumping of South Carolina State, finishing with 28 points and 11 boards. Fellow freshman Precious Achiuwa added 14 points and eight rebounds for the Tigers.

Payton Pritchard scored 24 points and Chris Duarte added 16 in his Oregon debut to help the No. 15 Ducks beat Fresno State, 71-57. Francis Okoro added 12 points and 10 rebounds to the victory for his first career double-double.

Jared Butler scored 30 points with a career-high eight 3-pointers as 16th-ranked Baylor blasted Central Arkansas, 105-61. MaCio Teague had 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Bears, who scored the game’s first 19 points.

No. 17 Utah State squeaked out an 81-73 win over Montana State behind Sam Merrill’s 28 points. Alphonso Anderson and Justin Bean each added 13 points for the Aggies.

Tyrique Jones had 17 points and 11 rebounds in No. 19 Xavier’s 76-57 pounding of Jacksonville. Naji Marshall also furnished 17 points and Paul Scruggs scored all 12 of his points in the first half, including a pair of 3-pointers that helped the Musketeers carry a 21-point edge into the break.

Jordan Ford scored 26 points and Malik Fitts added 16 in No. 20 Saint Mary's 65-63 overtime win against Wisconsin. Nate Reuvers tied a career high with 22 points and Brad Davison scored 16 for the Badgers.

Samir Doughty dropped in 20 points to lead No. 24 Auburn to an 83-74 victory over Georgia Southern. Doughty made five of six free throws over the final 1:09 to avoid a late scare after the Tigers wasted most of a 13-point lead over the final 12 minutes.

No. 25 VCU opened with a 72-58 win over St. Francis as Marcus Santos-Silva had 21 points and 18 rebounds. The Rams used an early 23-5 spree to open a 25-9 lead with just over eight minutes to play in the opening half.

NHL

It’s a 10-game winning streak for the New York Islanders after they knocked off the Ottawa Senators for the second time in a week. Cole Bardreau scored his first NHL goal on a penalty shot in the second period to help the Isles post a 4-1 win over Ottawa. Cal Clutterbuck and Casey Cizikas each had a goal and an assist for the Islanders, who have the second-longest winning streak in team history. New York led just 2-1 until Cizikas and Josh Bailey tallied 40 seconds apart midway through the third period. Thomas Greiss stopped 27 shots and blanked the Senators after J.P. Pageau had a short-handed tally 7:44 into the game.

Boston’s six-game winning streak is over after Ben Chiarot scored the tiebreaking goal midway through the third period of the Canadiens’ 5-4 victory over the Bruins. Victor Mete tallied twice and Tomas Tatar also scored before setting up the deciding goal in Montreal’s fourth win in five games.

Nikita Gusev and Jesper Boqvist scored in the shootout to send New Jersey past Winnipeg, 2-1. Nico Hischier scored in regulation for the Devils, who are 4-1-2 in their past seven games.

Sean Couturier had a goal and an assist and Travis Konecny scored the tiebreaker early in the third period of the Flyers’ 4-1 victory against the Hurricanes. Carter Hart made 33 saves versus Carolina, which has dropped six of 10 since a 5-0 start.

Jaden Schwartz scored at 3:28 of overtime to give the Blues a 2-1 victory at Vancouver. Tyler Bozak scored his first goal of the season and Jordan Binnington made 33 saves as St. Louis won its fifth in a row.

The Maple Leafs earned a 3-1 win over the Kings as Auston Matthews and William Nylander each had a goal and an assist. The game was tied 1-1 until Matthews and Nylander scored 30 seconds apart late in the third period.

The Flames rallied to earn a 4-3 win over the Coyotes on Matthew Tkachuk’s overtime goal with 33 seconds left on the clock. Calgary trailed 3-1 late in the third period until Tkachuk and Mark Giordano scored in a 59-second span to send the game to overtime.

Radek Faksa scored twice off rebounds and the Stars made it seven wins in their last eight games by downing the Avalanche, 4-1. Ben Bishop made 36 saves to help Dallas send Colorado to its fifth consecutive loss.

Reilly Smith scored twice to back Marc-Andre Fleury’s 29-save performance in the Golden Knights’ 2-1 victory at Columbus. Former Jacket William Karlsson assisted on both of Smith's goals as Vegas got back in the win column after dropping three of its last four.

Mats Zuccarello scored the tying breakaway goal and got an assist on Eric Staal's go-ahead goal early in the third period of Minnesota’s 4-2 triumph over the Ducks. Kevin Fiala also scored and Alex Stalock made 29 saves for the Wild, who came back from a two-goal deficit before ending a five-game road losing streak.

Patrick Marleau celebrated his 800th consecutive game by scoring a goal to help the Sharks double up the Blackhawks, 4-2. Evander Kane added a short-handed goal as San Jose ended a five-game skid.

NFL

The Bills have signed defensive tackle Corey Liuget to a one-year contract in a bid to shore up their run defense.

The New York Jets have placed cornerback Trumaine Johnson and wide receiver Josh Bellamy on season-ending injured reserve.

The Panthers have placed quarterback Cam Newton on injured reserve. Newton has missed the last six games while trying to battle back from a mid-foot sprain. Panthers general manager Marty Hurney said in a statement Tuesday that two foot specialists told the team "it likely will take significant time for the injury to fully heal." Newton was the league's MVP in 2015, but has lost his last eight starts dating to last season.

The Titans have placed cornerback Malcolm Butler on injured reserve after he injured his left wrist against the Panthers.

Defensive tackle Robert Nkemdiche has been released by the Dolphins, who decided the former first-round pick couldn't help their struggling defense.

Chargers owner Dean Spanos is emphatically denying reports that his franchise and the NFL are looking into relocating the team to London. The Athletic reported Monday night that the Chargers have been discussed by the league as a possible option to relocate to London because of the team's struggles to build a fan base in Los Angeles.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Ohio State is the top team in the first College Football Playoffs rankings of the season. LSU, Alabama and Penn State round out the top four as chosen by the 13-person selection committee that will release four more sets of rankings before the final one comes out on Dec. 8. The top four in the selection committee's initial rankings have never all reached the semifinals in the playoff's five-year history. Defending-champion Clemson is fifth, followed by Georgia, Oregon and Utah. Oklahoma and Florida round out the top 10.

No. 13 Minnesota and football coach P.J. Fleck have agreed to a seven-year contract extension that will keep him with the Golden Gophers through the 2026 season. The Gophers are off to an 8-0 start and on pace for just their second 10-win season since 1905. The extension is pending approval from the Board of Regents.

MLB

St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Shildt has been given a new three-year contract through the 2022 season. Shildt was hired as interim manager in 2018, replacing Mike Matheny. He just led the Cardinals to the NL Central title with a 91-71 record and is 132-99 as their bench boss. The Redbirds also announced extensions for president of baseball operations John Mozeliak and general manager Mike Girsch.
