A New York congressman wants U.S. Army officials to remove Confederate symbols at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Democratic Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney, whose 18th District includes West Point, has written to Secretary of Defense Mark Esper and Secretary of the Army Ryan McCarthy, saying that honoring Americans who engaged in armed rebellion against the United States in support of racism and slavery does not reflect the values of West Point or the Army. Maloney says there are a variety of U.S. Military Academy buildings and facilities named after Confederate generals and others who betrayed their country during the Civil War that should be renamed. He says, recently, Marine and Navy leadership announced bans on the public display of the Confederate battle flag on Marine installations.
