A suspect has been identified in the shooting of a school district security guard in Utica after a high school football game Saturday afternoon. Police say the suspect is a sixteen-year-old male who is enrolled in an alternative education program and not a current Proctor High School student. Police add the suspect’s name will not be released due to his age.

According to authorities, staff attempted to break up a fight following the game between Proctor High School and Binghamton High School in the school parking lot.

Two shots were fired during the fight, one striking the unidentified security guard in the back of the head. He was described as in critical but stable condition and police say he is expected to make a full recovery. According to authorities, a search began and was ended when the suspect turned himself in.

The boy was charged with second-degree attempted murder, second degree criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree- on school grounds-, criminal possession of a firearm, and first-degree criminal use of a firearm.

The Utica Police Department’s investigation is ongoing and is reviewing surveillance footage and social media video. Those with information are asked to call the department’s Major Crimes Unit or submit an anonymous tip online.

Utica School District Superintendent Kathleen Davis said all after-school activities Monday are canceled and counseling is being made available to students.
