Officials: Meteor Caused Sunday Night Explosion

Saratoga County Sheriff Michael Zurlo says it was likely a meteor entering the atmosphere that caused an explosion seen and heard across several communities Sunday night.

Zurlo says his office sought input from government agencies including the FAA, FBI, ATF, National Weather Service, and NASA, as well as local scientists, to get to the bottom of what happened in the evening sky.

“We appreciate their help in trying to find out what took place and we’re confident and 100 percent sure that it was a meteor entering and kind of burning up in the atmosphere,” said Zurlo.

The Sheriff’s department received more than 30 reports of the mysterious green flash that caused speculation across social media.
