Reviving The Wells That Made Saratoga Springs Famous

Saratoga Springs, New York, has long been famous for its naturally carbonated mineral waters. But concerns in the early 1900s that too many wells were threatening the aquifer prompted the state to shut down more than 100 of them and tightly control the flow of water.

Now, a volunteer group has undertaken a project, with the cooperation of state officials, to find and restore a few of the long-capped wells. At least one old well has already been tapped and plans are to restore a couple more.

State officials are quick to point out that the effort is limited to just a few wells in the Saratoga Spa State Park. They say it is purely for historical purposes and won't threaten the park's aquifer.
