New York Energy Regulators Predict Flat Rates This Summer

New York's utility regulators are predicting sufficient capacity for making electricity and flat prices this summer.

The hot weather usually means days of peak demand from running air conditioning.

Public Service Commission staff reports power generators and utilities have taken steps to address that traditional upswing.

As a result, the commission says wholesale electricity prices are expected to stay flat.

Commission Chair Audrey Zibelman says utilities have instituted programs to lower demand and are using hedging techniques to lessen spikes in market prices.

New York's peak summer loads are about 33,000 megawatts.

One megawatt is enough electricity to power between 800 to 1,000 average sized homes.
