Albany, NY – New York Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli says he will submit legislation shortly to impose financial penalties on officials who benefit from crimes related to their public positions, noting his previous similar proposal would have applied to former state Senator Carl Kruger. WAMC's Tristan O'Neill reports...
Kruger resigned before pleading guilty last month to federal charges in an influence-peddling case, admitting that he accepted nearly a half-million dollars in bribes.
The 62-year-old Brooklyn Democrat, who held the seat since 1994, filed his retirement application with New York's public pension system headed by DiNapoli.
According to the comptroller, the state Constitution prevents the forfeiture of Kruger's pension.
Under DiNapoli's proposal, officials who abuse the public trust would be forced to pay a penalty up to twice the amount they benefited from the crime.
