Schumer: Cut Down on Boat Boardings in Western NY

Albany, NY – Senator Charles Schumer is asking the Coast Guard in Western New York to work with local law enforcement to cut down on multiple boardings of recreational boats. WAMC's Tristan O'Neill reports...

It's an issue that got attention early this summer after angry boaters in the mid- and lower-Hudson River complained that they might be stopped several times a day by marine patrols that have gotten more active since the 9/11 attacks.

Schumer says Thursday it isn't a problem just on the Hudson. He wants better coordination to reduce the hassle for boaters and make the patrols more effective.

Among the possible fixes is a voluntary inspection system that would allow boaters to get safety stickers at the start of each season.

He also wants agencies to cooperate on tracking which boats have been screened.
