White Plains, NY – A judge has sentenced former New York State Senator Vincent Leibell to 21 months in prison. WAMC's Greg Fry reports...

Leibell pleaded guilty in December, and admitted to the court this week that he requested payments from lawyers doing business with a non-profit founded by Leibell in Putnam County. Federal prosecutors were seeking a sentence of up to two years. They say Leibell told an attorney to lie about the payments when questioned as part of a grand jury investigation. Leibell was elected to the seat of County Executive back in November, but entered the guilty plea less than a month before taking office. He served 16 years in the State Senate, and 12 years before that in the State Assembly. Leibell's felony convictions will not affect his public pension, estimated to be about 70-thousand dollars. He's likely to begin serving the sentence in mid-July.
