Albany, NY – Former president Bill Clinton says he's in favor of legalizing gay marriage in New York. The issue has the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo, who said this week he expects lawmakers to pass a bill before the end of session in June. More from WAMC's Dave Lucas...

Clinton, who has previously supported legalization, issued the statement Thursday through the advocacy group human rights campaign. He said New York must welcome marriage equality in the 21st century.

The group says it's grateful to Clinton for adding his voice to the majority of New Yorkers who support gay marriage.

The legalization drive suffered a surprising 2009 defeat in the state senate. It fell eight votes short of passage in the 62-seat chamber after strong support in the assembly.

New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, Iowa and Massachusetts, and the District of Columbia have approved gay marriage.
