By Dave Lucas

Albany, NY – New York has become the last state in the nation to allow couples to divorce without first establishing that someone is to blame... Capital District Bureau Chief Dave Lucas reports.

The "no fault divorce" bill was passed by the State Senate in June and signed into law over the weekend by Governor David Paterson. Opponents, including the Roman Catholic Church, believe the no-fault measure will lead to higher divorce rates. In less than sixty days, couples across New York can split and make it official by simply agreeing that they want to divorce. Adultery, cruel and inhuman treatment and abandonment will still remain grounds for divorce. The new law takes effect in mid-October and does not apply to divorce actions already in the pipeline.
