Plattsburgh, NY – The Spitfire was a gunboat commanded by Benedict Arnold during the Battle of Valcour Island in Lake Champlain south of Plattsburgh. It sank and sits upright, with its mast intact on the bottom of Lake Champlain. The cold lake waters have preserved the boat in nearly perfect condition. But with the incursion of zebra mussels and the expected arrival of quagga mussels, this landmark from the Revolutionary War is now in danger. On today's Community Corner, North Country Bureau Chief Pat Bradley talks with Lake Champlain Maritime Museum Director Art Cohen about a new documentary that reviews potential options for the Spitfire.
