Massachusetts’ Top Bear Biologist Talks Safety After Berkshire Shooting

MassWildlife
David Wattles.

Following a Berkshire County resident’s encounter with a black bear that left the animal dead in Housatonic last month, WAMC reached out to the state’s chief black bear biologist. David Wattles works for MassWildlife, the state agency that oversees the conservation of freshwater fish and wildlife in the Commonwealth. Wattles explained what his job entails, and says you can minimize run-ins with bears like the one in July.

Josh Landes has been WAMC's Berkshire Bureau Chief since February 2018 after working at stations including WBGO Newark and WFMU East Orange. A passionate advocate for Berkshire County, Landes was raised in Pittsfield and attended Hampshire College in Amherst, receiving his bachelor's in Ethnomusicology and Radio Production. You can reach him at jlandes@wamc.org with questions, tips, and/or feedback.
