Annual 4th Of July Fireworks Show Will Go On At Temporary Venue

WAMC

For the first time in more than 25 years, there will be a new venue for the July 4th fireworks show in Springfield, Massachusetts.

The festivities are being moved from the traditional location in downtown Springfield because of the $2.5 million renovation project underway at Riverfront Park.

Mayor Domenic Sarno said the show will go on at centrally located Blunt Park.

"This is a temporary one-year hiatus away from the riverfront, then we will come back to the riverfront and continue the specctacular fireworks there," said Sarno adding this year's show " is going to be a great time."

Spirit of Springfield President Judy Matt said there was never any thought of cancelling the fireworks show.

She credited the city’s fire department for extensive research to find the temporary venue.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
