Springfield City Council To Launch Budget Review Hearings

City Hall in Springfield, Ma

The City Council in Springfield, Massachusetts Tuesday will begin to review the proposed city budget

Four hearings have been scheduled for councilors to go through Mayor Domenic Sarno’s proposed budget department-by-department.

City Councilor Tom Ashe thinks the council won’t find much fault with the $628 million spending plan.

"The fact we got it far in advance and there is money going to the rainy day account, which is always important, is a good start," said Ashe. " I anticipate positive conversations."

By law, the council can cut, but cannot add to, the spending proposed by the mayor.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
