Springfield To Join Bird Conservation Program

Springfield, Massachusetts has been selected to participate in a federal conservation program for migratory birds.

Springfield will receive funds from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to improve bird habitat in the city and develop educational programming, according to Dave Bloniarz, president of the conservation nonprofit ReGreen Springfield.

"A great opportunity to engage and teach and have people in the city become more aware of the importance and value of our urban green space, wildlife and bird habitat," he said.

Springfield is one of just over two dozen cities nationwide designated to participate in the program known as the Urban Bird Treaty.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
