Public officials in Vermont are expressing interest in getting into the power generation business, now that a series of hydroelectric dams on the Connecticut and Deerfield rivers are up for sale.
The Canadian firm TransCanada is looking to sell the dams along with some other property in the Northeast to raise money to invest in a natural gas acquisition in Texas, according to reports in The Valley News.
On Tuesday, House Speaker Shap Smith issued a statement saying the state missed an opportunity when it tried to buy the dams but was outbid on them when they were last up for sale in the early 2000s.
Governor Peter Shumlin and gubernatorial candidates Peter Galbraith and Sue Minter say the state should look again at buying the dams.
