On Thursday, Connecticut education officials announced they are cutting the amount of time third- to eighth-grade students spend on standardized tests.Officials say eliminating one of two components of the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium exam will reduce testing time by as much as an hour and 45 minutes for each student. They say the part being eliminated often involved essays that duplicated in-class work.
Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and Education Commissioner Dianna Wentzell announced the change during a visit to Woodside Intermediate School in Cromwell. They highlighted the school's use of a state grant to reduce testing.
Federal law requires that students in grades three to eight take year-end standardized tests.
